What is a good funding rate on Hyperliquid?
Updated:
On Hyperliquid, funding is settled hourly, and a "normal" rate for an actively traded perp typically sits in a band of roughly ±0.001% to ±0.01% per hour. A rate that drifts far outside that band is a signal, not a verdict: it tells you which side is paying the other to hold the position, and how expensive that carry has become.
What "good" actually means
A funding rate is just a transfer between longs and shorts. A positive rate means longs pay shorts; a negative rate means shorts pay longs. So "good" is relative:
- If you are long in a positive-rate market, you are paying to hold — a lower (or negative) rate is better for you.
- If you are short in a positive-rate market, you are being paid — a higher positive rate is better for you.
There is no universally good number. The useful frame is whether the rate you are paying (or receiving) is justified by your view on price movement.
How to read a rate that is far from normal
When a perp's hourly funding climbs well above the typical band, it usually means one side has become crowded and traders are willing to pay up to stay in the trade. Two practical checks:
- Compare to recent history for that market. A 0.02%/hr rate is high for a major perp but unremarkable for a thin altcoin perp. Judge against the same market's own baseline, not a global average.
- Pair funding with open interest. Rising funding plus rising open interest means new money is piling into the paying side. Rising funding with flat or falling open interest often means existing positions are being squeezed rather than new conviction entering.
When funding flips negative
Negative funding (shorts paying longs) shows up when shorts are crowded — often after a sharp move down where late shorts pile in. For longs, negative funding is a small subsidy to hold; for shorts, it is a recurring cost that can turn a winning directional call into a losing trade if the rate persists.
FAQ
- Is a negative funding rate good or bad?
- Neither by itself. A negative rate means shorts pay longs, which favours holding a long position; whether that is "good" depends on your view of price direction and how long the rate stays negative.
- How often is funding settled on Hyperliquid?
- Hyperliquid settles funding hourly, so a quoted rate is applied each hour to open positions based on their notional size.
- Does a high funding rate mean price will reverse?
- Not necessarily. High funding signals a crowded side, but crowded trades can persist for long periods. Funding is a cost of carry, not a timing signal on its own.
